Last week’s Google Les Paul guitar doodle ended up costing much more than the couple thousand it took Google to make the thing. According to a report by Extreme Tech that was published by the Daily Mail, Google’s celebration of the guitar legend cost businesses an estimated $268.4 million in lost productivity.
The doodle, designed and uploaded in honor of Les Paul’s would-be 96th birthday, was kept up on the front page of the site for two days due to its popularity, and boy was it popular. The same report said that workers logged a ridiculous 10.7 million combined hours messing around with the playable doodle. That number comes from an average of 26 more seconds than normal spent on the Google home page over the two days the doodle was up multiplied by Google’s average of 740 million visitors per day.
Hopefully, Google’s message wasn’t lost on the masses, as it celebrated the life and accomplishments of Les Paul, the inventor of the electric guitar. Read our recent interview with Paul’s son Rusty Paul, who delves into what it was like growing up with and working with the reason for rock ‘n’ roll.
Oh, and just for the sake of wasting a little more time, check out Google’s permanent page for the Les Paul doodle.
