Guitarist Singer: the Bests in the Popular Music History

Modern popular music history records that most bands in the world were putting the players of the instrument as merely players of the instrument. If they contribute their voices in a song, the contribution was usually kept at the minimum. However, there are always different bands in the history that did not follow that pattern. In fact, there are several famous bands in which the players of the main instrument can also become the lead vocal of the band. A guitarist singer in such bands usually has remarkable skill both in producing sound as well as playing the instrument.

The first recorded successful guitarist singer that played in a band is of course John Lennon. He is the lead vocal of the legendary Beatles and also often played the rhythm section. He featured most of the lead vocal of the Beatles’ songs, much more often than his colleague, the bassist Paul McCartney, who also had amazing skill as a lead vocal. The next in the list is David Gilmour, who had been the lead vocal while performing the melody section of the legendary Pink Floyd. He appeared in remarkable songs like Mother and Wish You Were Here. Although the other band members like Roger Waters also contributed often enough into the band’s songs, Gilmour was considered as the main singer. When the heavy metal boomed in the 1980s and the early 1990s, music lovers witnessed James Hetfield of Metallica and Max Cavalera of the death metal band Sepultura as amazing artist. As a guitarist singer, James had developed a personal style both in his voice and in his playing style on the instrument for the rhythm section. Meanwhile, Max is well known for his heavy voice which influenced many other heavy metal vocalists.

The revivalism of Punk school and grunge in the 1990s saw Billie Joe Armstrong and Kurt Cobain as artists whose talent covered both the voice and skill for playing the critical instrument of the modern music. Green Day employed one player for the instrument who is also the lead vocal of the band. Kurt Cobain is may be the most controversial guitarist singer with his Punk-like stage performance which is combined with perfect control over the instrument and the voice. Today, people remember Cobain as one of the most talented artists and the day when he decided to perform suicide is being commemorated as a special day for him and his band, Nirvana.
