The band set the world ablaze with its unique combination of heavy metal, rap and other ever known popular music styles, especially after the band contributed a soundtrack for the movie Mission Impossible 2. While many critics said that Fred Drust is the band member that has the greatest influence on the success of the band, others believed that it was Wes Borland, the limp bizkit guitarist, who had played the most important part in shaping the uniqueness of the band’s styles since the band’s first album, Three Dollar Bill, Yall$.
The in fact had developed his own unique styles in playing the instrument which was amazingly had its source on bassist rather than the master of the main instrument for the 1908s. In the band’s first album, Wes Borland played all of the parts of his instrument. Some parts were believed to be influenced by thrash metal which had been combined by limp bizkit guitarist with harmonic usage. The harmonic usage itself was known as a style which was common in the industrial music. The combination was made richer with the integration of jazzy melodies. The songs themselves dubbed as progressive because the traditional structure of the song had been mixed with ideas which are experimental in nature. However, in the subsequent works, Wes Borland played rather slower with his instrument. In fact, he put more emphasizes on heaviness and groove while the songs had more traditional structure. The further style of this limp bizkit guitarist tended to be more eclectic. Heaviness and traditional structure were combined with complex and big chords which were not common in heavy metal music at that time.
However, his highest achievement was The Unquestionable Truth (Part 1), in which he aggressively employed distortion for most part of the album. Here, the limp bizkit guitarist focused more on metal tremolo picking, heavy riffing and mute/release techniques, which created sounds unique for the band. But some analysts said that Wes Borland achieved the most eclectic style in Back Light Burns, in which he combined all of his indie rock, progressive, soft, jazz, metal and electronic influences. With such development in his playing style, Wes Borland influenced many later players. Although he was not the first musician playing with 7 strings instrument, he had developed a unique chord set with his instrument by applying the 6 strings tunings for the 7 string instrument which resulted in more complex sound.
